Ten Habits of Internet Millionaires

Ten Habits of Internet Millionaires

All the successful internet millionaires out there (and there are a lot) have many things in common with each other. They share many similar character traits – one of them being a determination not to fail. But they also share many common practices which help to make them the successful online businessmen that they are.

Here are 10 things all successful internet millionaires know which have helped them achieve the phenomenal success they have enjoyed to date.

1. Social networking

This is linked to point number two. Linking to your site and blogging about it helps with SEO. But also, it helps to tell people about your site, your product and your services. Giving away free information on social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube will help to build your reputation and instill confidence in your potential customers. Be sure to keep your networking fresh, up-to-date and relevant to your site and product.

If you don’t want the hassle of writing your own tweets and blogs you can hire someone else to do it for you. There are plenty of people out there who are very adept at writing and finding articles to publish on your blogs and will do it for a relatively small fee. You could try elance.com, rentacoder.com and craigslist.com. You can write an advert and place it on these sites for free.

2. Search Engine Optimisation

A lot has been written about keywords, tags and site content with regards to Google and how it works. The bottom line is that Google is so complex in the way that it searches the internet that it’s difficult to fool it into liking your site. But here are a few key points to be aware of if you want your site to appear higher in a search.

a Original content is good. Don’t copy and paste too much from other people’s sites. Google recognises when there is repeat content and will not give your site any value if it looks like it’s simply a replica of someone else’s site or a duplicate of one of your own. Be original. Even if you use other people’s material, re-write it to read differently so that Google can’t identify it as duplicate content. Of course, plagiarism is out of the question so be sure that you are not ‘stealing’ someone else’s work and that anything you use has copyright permission attached.

b Use long-tail keywords in the tags of your website and in the content. Long tail keywords are more like phrases or sentences. So, for instance, one could search for ‘dogs’ on Google and that would result in millions of sites coming up in the search. However, if someone were to search for ‘how to train a German Shepherd’ that’s going to yield much fewer sites in the search which will increase the chances of your site getting further to the top. The trick is to find the right balance between specific keywords and quantity of users searching for that particular keyword. Too many and you’ll have too much competition, too few and you simply won’t get enough hits. Google’s keyword tool can be found by clicking on the link in my signature box below.

c YouTube videos. YouTube is great at generating traffic. If you can upload videos to YouTube to promote your product it should help greatly in increasing your search engine optimisation (SEO).

d Backlinks – that is links from other sites to your site, help with SEO too. Google likes sites which have backlinks to them. The easiest method for achieving this is to create Blogs, which are free, and to link to your site from those blogs. Twitter is also a good way of creating backlinks by tweeting your URL every so often – be sure it’s not too often or Twitter will shut you down as a spammer. The rule is, any site which has a link back to your site will increase your SEO, so the more people you can get to link to it, the better.

e Activity. Be sure to keep your blogs and other websites updated frequently. Google knows when there is activity and will promote sites that are active. Do a search on google and you’ll see that the ones reaching the top ten are sites which are constantly being updated with ads, blogs, forums, videos etc.

3. Target Advertising
Know your market and aim your pitch to only those people who may be interested in your product. Google ads, facebook ads and content ads – those placed directly onto people’s websites are good sources of advertising. Google ads use keywords used in the search engine to drive traffic to your site. You would do well to research what keywords to use in the copy of your site by using the keyword search tool provided free by Google.

Facebook uses its users profiles to target your ads. You can choose people’s interests, marital status, age, country etc to decide where you want your ads to appear. You can choose pay per click or pay per view for both of these methods.

The content ads are usually a deal struck between the advertiser and the owner of the website. This can be a percentage of sales or a flat-rate fee. The advantage is that you are advertising on a site where you know people already have a specific interest in the kind of product you are selling.

4. Create a great sales page
Your sales page is the all-important part of your online selling strategy. If this doesn’t work, visitors will simply leave and never come back. This is your moment on someone’s doorstep, or standing at the market stall. Everything you say here should be concise and to the point. Three key points to a successful sales page are:

a. Identify a need. Be sure that you know what need your product meets and make it clear to the visitor that their need is your concern. Identify that need. Highlight the need. Emphasise the need. Sometimes, people don’t even know they have a need for your product until you show them. Creating the awareness for need of your product is the first step in selling it.

b. Explain the benefits of your product. How it can make a difference to someone. How rapid and how massive the results can be. The key here is to get across the message that the visitor couldn’t possibly do without your product and that their life will be changed for the better if they buy it. Your product should be presented as being essential to meeting the need you have already identified.

c. Clearly state what your product is, how much it costs, where to download it or when it will be sent and always give a money-back guarantee. Nothing puts someone off buying more than lack of clarity or information. You need to keep them confident in your service as well as your product. The money back guarantee is another way of instilling confidence and hardly anyone will take you up on it – especially if your product is good.

d. Give away a free bonus. This will give the visitor a reason to proceed further and investigate. It’s a sprat to catch a mackerel. You sacrifice your free product with the intention that once you have them hooked you’ll be able to reel them in. Make sure your freebie is of good quality and is relevant to the product you are selling. If they find that your free bonus is of poor quality, they are hardly likely to pay money for anything else you’re offering.

There’s no substitute for great copy. Be sure that your sales copy is dynamic and to the point. If you have the cash, then pay someone else to write the copy for you. Or you could trawl the internet researching sales pages by some of the top entrepreneurs and simply copy their copy. All you have to do is adapt it to your product. The all important thing is that you enthuse the visitor and capture their imagination so that they will want to know more.

5. Build your mailing list.
They key to an ongoing, successful business is a good mailing list. Good doesn’t necessarily mean ‘big’. It’s more important that the people you have on your mailing list are relevant to the product you are selling. For instance, you don’t want to be trying to sell a book on weaning babies to a pensioner – hardly like to make any sales there. So how to do go about building a list of people you KNOW are interested in your particular product?

Create and Opt In Page, Landing Page or Squeeze Page (they’re just different terms for the same thing). This is also known as the sales page. This is where you promote your product and ask the visitor to give you their contact details – their first name and email address is enough. Two ways you could do this:

a. Offer to give something away for free. Usually a free report – this can even be an article you’ve found on EzineArticles.com. Be sure that you include the author and source of the report, it’s not legal or moral to take someone else’s work and pass it off as your own. When your visitor knows that they will get something of value for free in exchange for their contact details they are more likely to comply.

Once they have opted-in you can then send them to a thank-you page where you ask them if they are interested in purchasing your product. This is where your big promotion is done. You’ve already given them something for free, now you want to know if they want to buy something. Even if they don’t this time, you have them on your mailing list so you can remind them of your product at a later date.

b. Sell your product, offer a free gift and ask for their contact details all at once. This is the preferred method for most online entrepreneurs. A sales pitch can read something like ‘A great product worth 7 being offered today for only .97. Plus a free bonus worth 0 if you buy today. Just enter your details here to find out more’.

It’s pretty much the same scenario in a slightly more compact package. Both are effective.

If you are concerned about how you can get all this functioning there are two great services you can use. One is called Getresponse.com and the other is Aweber.com. Both provide automatic emailing to your mailing list as well as providing you with all the necessary tools for linking your site to their service, and all very easy to use. You will use this service to create follow up campaigns to sell further products and to provide your mailing list with useful information to maintain your relationship with them.

6. Leveraging YouTube
Videos are easier for people to take in information they also increase SEO (search engine optimisation) with Google. Google owns YouTube so the link between the search engine and the YouTube website couldn’t be more efficient. It is a known fact that a link from YouTube to your website increases search engine optimisation which means that your site appears higher up in the Google search.

The kind of videos you upload to YouTube is entirely up to you. You could create a promo video for your product with PowerPoint presentation and a simple voice over. Or you could just set it to music (be sure the music is royalty-free or you could get sued).

Another kind of video is one where you talk to the camera. These can be quite effective if you have a natural, camera-friendly presentation style. It can help to create trust in your audience since they have a face to put to the name.

Any other YouTube videos connected to your site will help to create traffic. The YouTube audience is massive and growing daily.

Another way of leveraging YouTube is to find a video which has already gained popularity and ask the owner of that YouTube account if they would put a link to your site from their YouTube page for a small fee. You can generate a lot of traffic this way and it’s a lot cheaper than pay-per-click advertising.

7. Affiliate Marketing
There’s probably not one internet entrepreneur out there who hasn’t been or isn’t currently engaged in some kind of affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is a way of making money by promoting other people’s products. Quite often these are e-books, DVDs or mp3s. You don’t need to own these products or even create a product of your own. With affiliate marketing it’s a simple as finding an affiliate product then promoting it – literally, just telling people about it.

A great place to start your affiliate marketing is with an online service called Clickbank. This is an online marketplace where thousands of e-books are sold daily. People who have created products upload them to Clickbank and allow other users to sell them for a percentage of the profits – sometimes up to 75% – yes, you get to keep 75% of the sales of each product sold.

There are many ways to promote other people’s products online – YouTube videos, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace etc. Any time someone clicks on your ‘Hop’link – supplied by Clickbank, they are taken to the sales page of the product but any sales generated will be allocated to your affiliate program and the payments are automatically made to your clickbank account.

It’s as simple as that. No expertise, no technical jargon – just find something you like and tell people about it.

8. Create Joint Ventures
Promote other people’s sites and products in exchange for them doing the same for you. This is something to consider once you have something which you know can be of worth to another marketer. For instance, you may have created a big list of contacts and you may offer to promote his product to your list in exchange for him doing the same for you.

Another example of joint ventures is when someone promotes their product on their website in exchange for you doing the same. Sometimes this may be a no-money exchange or other times a percentage of sales can be agreed between the two parties.

Often, marketers who have enjoyed a certain measure of success may get invited to speak at another marketers seminar. This is usually a free opportunity with the gain the one hosting the seminar gets a free speaker and the one speaking gets a free audience.

9. Follow-up marketing (upselling)
Once you have had someone show an interest in your product or service you should keep in constant contact with them. Send them free reports, links to great websites, news items related to your subject of interest. Now and then, you should send them news of a new product. Many sales are made after the initial contact has been made. On average a customer only becomes a customer after they have received 7-10 emails from you, so don’t take a ‘no-sale’ at the start to mean that they are not interested. They just need help in making up their minds.

If your first product is cheap – let’s say an e-book, on sale for . Your second product could be more expensive – perhaps the same book as an audiobook going for . You may then create a course of DVD seminars on sale for 0. If your customers liked your first product they will be more than inclined to purchase any further products from you. So keep thinking, keep creating and keep promoting.

10. Publishing Articles
Articles create backlinks to your site and help promote interest. Online article services like EzineArticles.com publish hundreds of thousands of articles on all kinds of subjects. These articles are available to download for free. Where they can help your business is that you can put the URL for your website into the article and it automatically generates code which search engines like and can increase traffic to your sales page.

Be sure to keep the links to a minimum or your reader may get fed up with the hard sell. After all, they want to read an article not an advert. The more information you are willing to part with for free, the more your potential customers will trust you and want to buy from you.

The more articles you write and publish, the more people will read them and the more traffic you will generate to your sales page or website, and the higher up the search in Google or Yahoo your website will sit. Articles are a very good way of promoting your online business.

AND THE ELEVENTH HABIT?
Never, never, never give up. Success comes through a lot of hard work and determination. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t achieve overnight success. Be persistent and never doubt that can do it. No entrepreneur ever achieved anything
